Daphne writes: We had a talk recently and the speaker mentioned contraception. What is contraception? What are the various methods of contraception? How many children should a married couple have in their family? In your opinion, it is important for Singaporeans so have bigger families? Why or why not?
Aunt Wise: Contraception is when you take some action to prevent a pregnancy. It's important for all young people to think about contraception and the type that could best suit you, well before you get intimate with someone - to avoid an unwanted pregnancy and to give you choice about when, or if, you're ready to be a parent. Which contraception you choose may be based on your physical health, the type of relationship you're in, your cultural background, your values and beliefs and what is available where you live. You could discuss the different contraceptive methods further with a trusted adult, or even better, a health professional.
There are many different types of contraception. Some are controlled by a woman (eg. hormone contraceptive pills or injections), and some mainly by a man (eg. condoms). Both partners are responsible for making decisions about sexual intimacy and contraception; communication is the key! The different types of contraception are: condoms, contraceptive injection, diaphragm emergency, contraceptive pills, Implanon IUD, Natural family planning, sterilisation and the pill. Spermicides (products that kill sperm) are important additions to using diaphragms, and can make condoms more effective. However, they are not effective on their own as contraceptives, nor are they of any use in protecting against sexually transmitted infections.
I feel that because Singapore is becoming an ageing population, the Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, wants every married Singapore to make at least 2 children. Hence, incentives is given to even Singapore that gives birth to a baby, which is very tough to take care.
However, some families would like to have bigger families. I feel that there are advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are that Singapore would have a larger population, which the government wants. With many children in the family, the whole family would be more lively and full with joy. The disadvantages are that children are hard to take care. If the couple is not ready to handle many expenses for the child like: pampers, milk, clothes, food, etc. I advise the parents that they should not try to bear such a big responsibility and use contraception. Those families with low expenses are not advised to have too much children as it may increase their burden.
Hence, my views are that having smaller families are better. However, smaller families does not mean that there is not heir in the family. Smaller families are families with a father, a mother, ad 1 or 2 children.
